Reminder: Why are we continuing to review the Old Testament stories?

1 Corinthians 10:11 Now these things happened to them as examples, and they were written as a warning to us, on whom the ends of the ages have come.
Romans 15:4-6 For whatever was written in the past was written for our instruction, so that we may have hope through endurance and through the encouragement from the Scriptures. Now may the God who gives endurance and encouragement allow you to live in harmony with one another, according to the command of Christ Jesus, so that you may glorify the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ with a united mind and voicewe left off last session in the beginning of the Book of Judges.

We left off last session in the beginning of the Book of Judges.

Judges 21:25 In those days there was no king in Israel; everyone did whatever he wanted.

ESV says it this way: " Everyone did what was right in his own eyes." (Their own human understanding)

Deuteronomy 12:8-9 [Moses cautions the Nation Israel] “You are not to do as we are doing here today; everyone is doing whatever seems right in his own eyes. Indeed, you have not yet come into the resting place and the inheritance the Lord your God is giving you. "

So Moses foretold what would happen. And that is exactly what we read in Judges 21:25. His prediction came true!

Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not rely on your own understanding; think about (acknowledge) Him in all your ways, and He will guide you on the right paths.

1. Walking in dependence on one’s human understanding / walking in / after the flesh.

Versus

2. Walking by faith in dependence on the Lord / walking in / after the Spirit.

We have previously discussed the story of the 12 spies, sent by Moses to scout out the Promised Land, In Numbers 13-14.

1. Ten who saw God’s promises through their human senses and understanding,

Versus

2. Joshua and Caleb by faith saw God’s promises through their spiritual senses.

In Numbers 14:26-35 we are told that of all the people that God rescued from Egypt, only two men, Joshua and Caleb, entered the Promised Land.

Numbers 14:24 [God says of Caleb] But since My servant Caleb has a different spirit and has followed Me completely, I will bring him into the land where he has gone, and his descendants will inherit it.

Question: What does it mean, "a different spirit"?

Question: Can I actually follow God completely? If it makes logical sense to follow God completely, why don't I do that?

The first two major problems they encountered as they wanted to enter the Promised Land:

1) What are the real world "giants" or obstacles I face or have faced?

3) Do I believe I should "spy out" the promised land first OR do I trust God and "go up" to take?
